The Global AI Race: CalypsoAI Hosts Panel Discussion with DoD Leaders and CSIS

Jul 12, 2022

“How do you get models deployed in the right places, at the right times, with the right operational technologies deployed with them? … And most importantly, how do you make sure they garner the warfighters’ trust?” – Neil Serebryany, CalypsoAI CEO

On Tuesday, June 28, CalypsoAI hosted a panel discussion at the headquarters of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., covering the topic of “National Security and Artificial Intelligence: Global Trends and Challenges,” with a focus on the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and its newly formed Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO).

The discussion, moderated by Jake Harrington of CSIS, featured the following panelists:

Much of the discussion focused on the global AI race, how U.S. allies and adversaries are approaching AI development, and what the United States needs to do to remain the global leader when deploying these technologies in defense and intelligence applications. The event came on the heels of the DoD’s release of the long-awaited “Responsible Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Implementation Pathway,” which details the Department’s goals and plans to ensure AI adoption is accelerated while emphasizing effectiveness, trust, democratic principles, and ethics.

As David Spirk mentioned in his opening remarks, “We have a pacing threat. We have other nation-states now who want to move faster in this space because they believe that [AI] is their advantage to jump in front of Western society and the freedom and values we embrace today. This is the new battlespace.”

The discussion highlighted that in the DoD’s quest for responsible AI, the Department will need a significant investment in tools and resources that will support the efficient deployment of such technologies, as well as building and maintaining warfighter trust. On this topic, Jane Pinelis said, “Rigorous testing and validation is actually a significant advantage over our adversary.”

The conversation around AI’s role in defense will continue to evolve, especially as the DoD makes such systems a part of everyday decision-making. The panelists all emphasize that the time is now for the U.S. government to accelerate its development and implementation of responsible AI, or it risks losing ground in a global race that shows no sign of slowing down.

As CalypsoAI’s CEO, Neil Serebryany, highlighted, two of AI’s greatest benefits are speed and precision, and the future of the DoD relies upon putting in the work and investing in the tools to ensure these systems are being deployed effectively, enabling U.S. leaders to take full advantage of the opportunities that AI provides.
